Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between loose, stacked and solid cubic metres?

A solid cubic metre is pure wood with no air. A stacked cubic metre is neatly stacked wood and holds about 0.7 of a solid one. A loose cubic metre is tipped wood and holds about 0.4. A price per cubic metre means nothing without saying which.

How much firewood does a heating season take?

A reasonably insulated 100 square metre house on wood heat takes 10–15 stacked cubic metres a season. An uninsulated one can need twice that. The best answer is last season's figure, since buildings differ more in insulation than firewood does in quality.

Which firewood gives the most heat?

Denser wood gives more heat per cubic metre: oak and hornbeam most, then birch and ash, then alder and aspen, with conifers least and resinous enough to build up soot. By weight all species are similar, so density is what makes the difference.

How long does firewood need to dry?

Cut and split wood needs one to two years under cover with air moving through it, until moisture drops below twenty percent. Fresh wood above fifty percent gives half the heat, because the energy goes into boiling off the water.
