Waiting on official figures

This calculator is built, but we have not yet confirmed every rate it needs against the official source. We do not show a guess and we do not carry last year's rate forward.

Waiting on these figures:

  • the percentages of average earnings that sick pay is calculated from
  • how many days the employer pays before the state takes over

We will publish as soon as this source confirms the figures:

Frequently asked questions

How is sick leave paid in Latvia?

Sheet A is the employer's responsibility and is paid from the employee's average earnings, while sheet B is paid by the state through VSAA as a sickness benefit. The first day of illness is not paid at all, and that boundary is where most of the confusion sits.

Why does this calculator show no amount?

Because two figures are missing: the number of days the employer pays for, and the percentage coefficients applied to average earnings. Until those are confirmed on a public VID or VSAA page, the calculator names what it lacks rather than showing an estimate that would look right.

What are average earnings for sick pay based on?

Average earnings come from pay in preceding months on which VSAOI contributions were already withheld, and VSAA reads that from the employer's reports to VID. So for anyone with variable pay or a recent job change the result can differ noticeably from last month's salary.

Is sickness benefit taxed?

Personal income tax is withheld from the sickness benefit VSAA pays, but social contributions are not, which is why the amount received differs from the amount calculated. The rate and the tax-free allowance come from the same VID page the salary calculation uses.
